Yekwon Sunwoo and Tommaso Benciolini Join Eurasian Stars for Evening of Musical Excellence

The Eurasian Stars International Music Festival reached the halfway point of its 2026 edition on Thursday 15th October, presenting another outstanding orchestral concert at the Alisher Navoi State Academic Grand Theatre in Tashkent.

The evening featured acclaimed South Korean pianist Yekwon Sunwoo and distinguished Italian flautist Tommaso Benciolini, appearing alongside the National Symphony Orchestra of Uzbekistan under the baton of Colombian-American conductor Johann-Sebastian Guzman. Bringing together contemporary compositions and celebrated classical masterpieces, for music lovers of all generations.

The concert opened with Alexey Shor's Suite for Piano and Orchestra No. 3, "Childhood Memories", an expansive nine-movement composition which explores the memories, emotions, and experiences associated with childhood, providing Sunwoo with an opportunity to demonstrate the versatility and technical refinement that have made him one of the most admired pianists of his generation.

Reflecting on the composition, Sunwoo noted that, "I find this piece very charming and nostalgic. It has a beautiful sense of simplicity and innocence, while also offering moments of warmth and emotion. It was a pleasure to explore these qualities and bring them to life through music."

Guzman, meanwhile, was making his first visit to Uzbekistan, as well as his first appearance at Eurasian Stars. The conductor was equally enthusiastic about the opportunity to explore Shor's music, commenting that "this was my first encounter with Alexey Shor’s music as a performer, and Childhood Memories was great fun to explore. Each of its nine movements has its own style, structure, curiosity, and color, which gave us a wonderful sense of freedom and discovery."

The programme subsequently turned to Mozart, with Benciolini taking centre stage for the composer's Flute Concerto No. 1 in G major. One of the most enduring works in the instrument's repertoire, the concerto combines graceful melodic writing with passages of considerable technical brilliance, allowing the Italian soloist to fully showcase his command of the flute.

The evening then concluded with Mozart's Symphony No. 35 in D major, "Haffner", a vibrant four-movement composition which provided a fitting conclusion to an evening of musical contrasts.

Reflecting on the concert, Eurasian Stars President Konstantin Ishkhanov highlighted the festival's commitment to bringing together different musical generations and traditions. "One of the things that makes Eurasian Stars so special is the variety of experiences we can offer audiences within a relatively short period. Tonight, we had two exceptional soloists, a wonderful young conductor, and a programme that moved between the imaginative musical world of Alexey Shor and the timeless brilliance of Mozart. These are the kinds of artistic encounters that make festivals like ours so rewarding."

As the eighth edition of Eurasian Stars progresses, the festival continues to bring distinguished international performers to Uzbekistan, presenting audiences with an impressive variety of orchestral and chamber music performances.
